Langton
Green is a village of some 3,000 inhabitants which lies
about two miles to the west of its much larger and better
known neighbour of Tunbridge Wells. Much of it is located
in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty close to the Kent/Sussex
border surrounded by the rolling English countryside.
Like most traditional villages it boasts a church, a pub,
a school and a village green as well as an assortment of local
shops. All Saints Church was designed
by the eminent Victorian architect Sir George Gilbert Scott
with the stained glass for the windows supplied by the then
little-known firm of William Morris and Co. Apparently Gilbert
Scott was a friend of a wealthy Langton Green resident, which
explains his interest and presence in the area. Next to the
Church stands the village pub, The
Hare, a popular meeting place at all times of the year
with a terrace overlooking the Green in summer and roaring
log fires in the winter.
Langton
Green Primary School moved from the original building
(now a private house) next to the Church many years ago and
is housed in purpose built premises by the local recreation
ground. It has an excellent reputation and there is a long
waiting list for places. In addition, there is also Holmewood
House School in the village, the well known private preparatory
school founded in 1945.
A variety of shops are located along the A264 which runs
through the village and though there have been some changes
recently, there is still a butcher, a baker, a busy newsagent
and a general store as well as an antique shop, an equestrian
shop and an Indian restaurant. Langton Green also has a thriving
sports
club for all ages.
